How to Name Characters That Stick
A craft guide to character naming—sound, culture, subtext—and when an AI generator helps.
A character name is a tiny contract with the reader: tone, world, and sometimes destiny.
Sound before meaning
Say the name out loud next to your protagonist’s name. Do they clash? Do they rhyme by accident? Can you shout it in a confrontation scene?
Constraints that help
- Genre expectations (but leave room to surprise)
- Cultural or linguistic consistency in your world
- Avoiding famous real people and franchise echoes
- Distinct initials in the main cast
Using a generator well
Generate more than you need, then filter:
- Shortlist 8–12
- Test in a sentence of dialogue
- Check for unintended meanings
- Sleep on it
PlotnAI’s character name tool is built for that shortlist phase—not to decide for you.
